  • May 8, 1886 The “Dry-Cell” Battery is Introduced - German scientist, Dr. Carl Gassner, is issued a German patent for the first “dry” cell battery, which uses zinc as its primary component.
  • May 2020 – Thirteen students are the first to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Intelligent Systems Engineering from the IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering.

  • April 17, 1967 Surveyor 3 is launched - The spacecraft Surveyor 3 is launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida. It is the second U.S. spacecraft to make a soft landing on the Moon (Surveyor 2 crash landed) where it will study the lunar surface and send more than 6,300 pictures back to Earth.

I woke up in a sappy mood. While I am sheltered at home alone, I am thankful for all of my colleagues, students, friends, and family who I have welcomed into my home via Facebook Messenger Video, FaceTime, GoToWebinar, Ring Central, and Zoom. Thank you for standing by me and also welcoming me into your space. During this time of quarantine, I have learned more about my Luddy community. So, I ask that you continue to STAND BY ME.

This Day in Tech History:

  • April 16, 1977 Apple vs. Commodore - On the same day at the first annual West Coast Computer Faire, both the Apple II and Commodore PET 2001 personal computers are introduced. Ironically, Commodore had previously rejected purchasing the Apple II from Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, deciding to build their own computers. Both computers used the same processor, the MOS 6502, but the companies had two different design strategies and it showed on this day.

  • Motivate the Luddy School community to identify solutions and creative approaches to fostering an inclusive culture.

Although things may seem bleak, I believe that together we will RISE UP.  So, today I’m listening to the song RISE UP and finding ways to best use this gift of time.
