- TOPIC: Game Theory and Social Media
- Above class meets with a section of INFO-I 609
Topic: Game theory and social media
Game theory is a set of tools for modelling strategic interactions and making predictions about how those interactions will turn out. It has been studied for a century by Economists, Mathematicians, Computer Scientists, Biologists, and Social Scientists to tackle questions as diverse as whether bacteria can cooperate, and how we can avoid nuclear war. In this course we will discuss how game theory can be used to help understand the way social media shapes the way we think and behave. We will engage with a mixture of classic texts and cutting edge research, in order to explore how concepts such as rationalizability, incomplete and imperfect information, zero-sum thinking and the price of anarchy relate to phenomena such as online echochambers and polarization.
