If this course is full, consider INFO-I453 (12833) Computer & Information Ethics, Summer 2025, an intensive 6 week online asynchronous course. ### Course Description INFO -I 453 (8310) Active Learning, Case Studies, This course explores the ethical issues that arise in the context of designing and using computing and information technologies (ICTs)¿in a global context. You will study major ethical theories and use them to consider ethical dilemmas in a range of contexts. In this course you will explore different values, reflect on your values, and consider how the ways in which we apply values to different situations may be different from that of our best friends, family members, and colleagues around the world. Why focus on global and international perspectives? Technology is global, as are its ethical dilemmas. Post graduation you may find yourself working for international companies, and or with colleagues around the world. If you are going to solve problems¿tackle ethical dilemmas¿you need to understand the perspectives of those with the same and different backgrounds and cultures, in order to propose solutions that reduce or minimize harm. New for Spring 2025 - the course will partner with the Lilly Library to provide you with opportunities to engage directly and meaningfully with primary source materials from the Lilly Library related to ethics and emerging technologies. Through interacting with materials from numerous time periods and regions, you will develop a more complete understanding of the ways in which people have applied ethical theories in the context of technology across culture and time while building your information literacy skills. This course will help you to develop, articulate, and refine your own ethical thinking; analyze the information you encounter in light of ethical theory; and argue your position effectively, giving consideration to global values and understanding.
