- Is the GRE required?
No, the GRE is optional for all Luddy Bloomington Graduate programs - Do I need to provide English proficiency scores?
All international applicants for our MS programs need to provide a current IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo test scores unless they have completed all their undergraduate education in a US education institution.
All international PhD applicants are required to provide a current IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo to be considered for funding, regardless of undergraduate or previous graduate education. - Do I send my English proficiency scores electronically or by paper?
Electronically for official scores. You must have your official test scores sent to Indiana University. It can take a few weeks for your scores to be sent and processed, so please plan accordingly. In your application, you must enter current TOEFL or IELTS scores in the Academic History section of your application. Note about Duolingo scores: You cannot enter your scores in the Academic History section of the application but are still required to upload the scanned copy of your scores to the Program Materials section.
You are required to upload scanned copies of your official English proficiency scores, and we will use these as unofficial scores until the official scores arrive. These scanned copies should be uploaded into any empty portal the Program Materials section of your application.
We will only consider English proficiency scores from either TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo. Your test scores must be earned within the past 2 years to be considered for review. Many of our students score 100 or above for TOEFL; 7.0 or above for IELTS; and 120 or above for Duolingo.
For TOEFL and TOEFL at Home Edition, our School Code is 1324. If the program is not listed, use the department code of 60. For IELTS, you will send your scores to "Indiana University - Office of International Admissions." For Duolingo, you will send your scores to "Indiana University Bloomington - Undergraduate/Graduate." - Are your programs STEM programs?
Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, and Informatics degrees at Luddy are classified as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) designated degree programs by the Department of Homeland Security. By earning a degree in a STEM program, an international student on a F-1 visa can apply for a 24-month STEM optional practical training (OPT) extension. Visit Indiana University’s Office of International Services website for more information. - Do my recommenders need to be from academia, or can they be professional?
We require three (3) letters of recommendation. You may enter a maximum of 5 recommenders. Recommendations should be from academic and/or professional references who can attest to your abilities, accomplishments, strengths, knowledge, and experience. If you have experience as a teaching assistant, consider asking your teaching supervisor to write a recommendation. Once you have saved recommendation information, an email request will be sent automatically to the recommender on your behalf. Please advise your recommender to look for this email in their inbox, as well as their spam or junk-mail folder. - Can I submit my application before my LORs are sent in?
Yes. You can submit your application before your letters are submitted. Letters can be uploaded by your recommenders after your submission but are needed by the deadline. - Can I submit my application before my TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores are sent?
Yes. Please do not wait for electronic scores to be sent to submit your application. This is where your uploaded scoresheet works in your favor. We use it as a “placeholder” until the official scores come in. - Have you received my electronic scores from ETS or IDP?
They are showing as “pending” in my application. Applicants will not be able to see their electronic scores in their application. Scores only attach to submitted applications. - Do you accept 3-year degrees from international students?
Yes. The Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering's graduate programs admits students with a 3-year or a 4-year bachelor's degree. - Do you have rolling admissions?
No, we do not have rolling admissions. Applications will be reviewed after the semester deadlines. - I would like to transfer from my current university to Indiana University’s Luddy School. What do I need to do?
We do not have a “transfer” option. You would need to go through the full application process. - When will I receive a decision on my application?
For fall semester, PhD decisions are rendered in February. Masters are sent out in March. For spring semester, PhD and MS decisions are sent out in October. - Do you offer application fee waivers?
We do not offer fee waivers. - I received an email from the Office of International Services (OIS) to upload my financial documents in Atlas. Do I need to upload these documents for my application to be completed?
Once an application has been submitted, international students will receive three separate emails over a few weeks with instructions to create an Atlas account, upload financial documents and passport information. This is not a requirement for the application process, but it is required if an applicant accepts an offer. OIS handles all international students’ visa paperwork and documentation. If you have not received an email from OIS, please check your spam and promotions folders for an email from newtoiu@iu.edu FIRST! If you still do not find it, then please email them. These emails would have been sent in the first few weeks of your submission. - When will I receive my i20?
The Office of International Services (OIS) prepares all i20s. The full process can take up to eight (8) weeks. You can check your status on your Atlas account. Please do not email OIS for an update on your i20 status. Continually emailing only slows down their processes. - How do I apply for a scholarship or assistantship?
All applications are considered for any funding that may be available. Most MS students do not receive any funding but find job opportunities on campus. It is the student’s responsibility to be sure they have enough funding for the duration of their program BEFORE they arrive on campus. It is not recommended to rely on a campus job to cover all your expenses. - Has IUB received my TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores yet?
During the height of admissions season, receipt of official test scores can be delayed. This is why we require the unofficial test scoresheet to be uploaded to your application. Scores will be sent to an application only after it has been submitted. NOTE: It is very helpful to be sure your name is written the same throughout all your documents. We highly recommend your name as it is on your passport. - Where do I see the status of my application?
Unfortunately, there is not a way to monitor the status of your application. It is in your best interest to check your spam and promotions folders regularly. - My passport has not been approvedyet. Is there an issue?
The Office of International Services (OIS) handles all documents pertaining to your i20 and visa. In most cases, the passport is the last document to be approved prior to the release of your i20. - Atlas shows my i20 is ready but I cannot access it. What do I do?
It can take a few days for your i20 be accessible to you after OIS lets you know it is available. If, after 3-5 business days, you are still not able to download your i20, you need to contact OIS directly. Please do not email everyday until you can download your document!
