"Professor Jean Preer has informed Executive Associate Dean Tomas Lipinski of her intent to retire at the end of July, 2012. Dr. Preer joined the IU School of Library and Information Science in fall 2002, one of the first faculty in the school's expanded program in Indianapolis. In her years at SLIS Indianapolis, she has been recognized for both teaching and research excellence. In 2006 she received the Award for Teaching Excellence in Library and Information Science from the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE). In 2007, her essay, "Promoting Citizenship,'" won the Justin Winsor Prize from the Library History Round Table of the American Library Association, and in 2009, her book, Library Ethics, won the Greenwood Publishing Group Award for Best Book in Library Literature.
As a SLIS faculty member, Dr. Preer has presented her research findings at conferences across the United States and in Bulgaria, Australia, and China, where she represented ALISE at the 90th anniversary of the founding of the library school at Wuhan University. In summer 2009, she traveled to Eldoret, Kenya, for a month of learning and service, as part of a Fulbright-sponsored group of IUPUI faculty and students and IPS [Indianapolis Public Schools] teachers.
In Spring 2012, Dr. Preer will teach S502 Collection Development and Management and S550 Perspectives on Librarianship. In the first summer session 2012, she will teach Library Philanthropy (and Fundraising). Dr. Preer expressed her appreciation for the great support and wonderful opportunities she has had as a faculty member here. We wish her well in her future endeavors."
