The leaves are falling, but Luddy Hall keeps rising out of the ground.
Work on the new 124,000-square-foot facility that will serve as the new home of the School of Informatics and Computing continues at a brisk pace, and the building is starting to take shape. Following a summer of nearly incessant hammering to create a foundation for Luddy Hall, the concrete for the first floor has already been poured, and work has moved on to the upper floors.
Contractors are currently working on pouring the concrete for the second floor of the four-story building, and each floor will receive three “pours” of concrete. As each floor is finished, the forms for the concrete are taken down and moved to the next floor. The support columns are poured, and the floor follows at the appropriate time.
As the temperature drops, contractors take countermeasures to maintain the quality of concrete to assure uniform integrity throughout the building. Floors are expected to be added every 5-to-6 weeks. With the roof structure slated to be completed in February.
At present, the second floor on the north side of the building is the focus of the work. On the south side, the support columns for the second floor are rising, and some detail work on that side of the building is still being completed.
Luddy Hall is scheduled to be completed in late 2017. Work is ongoing to settle on furniture, messaging and wayfinding, and art for the building.
