The Department of Information and Library Science has been notified that the degrees of Master of Information Science and Master of Library Science at Indiana University Bloomington have been re-accredited by the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation. The program has been continuously accredited since 1951.
“We are delighted that the program has been accredited. It is the result of the excellence and strength of the ILS faculty and staff, and the outstanding opportunities they afford our students,” said Dean of the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering Raj Acharya.
The accreditation is the result of an extensive process that includes a self-study and external review panel visit, as well as annual statistical and biennial narrative reports on the programs. Each year, the department assesses retention rate, average time to completion, and placement rate. ILS also uses the vision, mission, and goals of the department to evaluate how the programs meet the evolving needs of our students and the world.
ALA accreditation ensures academic programs meet a set of standards for master’s programs in Library and Information Studies, and is important for graduates in their professional job search. The ALA accredits 65 programs at 60 institutions in library and information studies in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
The next comprehensive review for re-accreditation is scheduled for spring 2026.
