SLIS alumna Joanne E. Passet (MLS '80, Ph.D. '88) has been awarded a J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Award for the 2008—2009 academic year. Passet is a Professor of History at the Indiana University East campus, and will also teach SLIS S580 History of Libraries during Summer II on the IUPUI campus.
Marilyn Irwin, SLIS Associate Dean - Indianapolis, noted: "Because she has two Ph.D.s (one in library science and one in history), she will be going to Nha Trang University where they are eager to have someone to advise them on library development and pedagogy as well as taking advantage of her history background. Congratulations to Dr. Passet!"
Passet was featured in an IU Home Pages story on May 2, 2008. She was quoted:
As a growing part of the global economy, the Vietnamese are interested in cross-cultural exchange. Working with Vietnamese students, faculty, and librarians will provide me with a new perspective on U.S. history and culture. It is a wonderful opportunity to grow intellectually and to form lasting friendships. The award of a Fulbright scholarship is one of the highest recognitions of academic excellence that a faculty member at an American university can receive", said Larry Richards, executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at IU East. "Dr. Passet is an outstanding example of the quality faculty that IU East employs. She will return with new ideas and knowledge that will enrich the learning experiences of her students and the entire campus. [excerpt from the IU Home Pages story]
