
Waldo Gifford Leland Award: "Created in 1959, this prize encourages and rewards writing of superior excellence and usefulness in the field of archival history, theory, or practice." [SAA website]
The Society of American Archivists (SAA) established this award for "Publishing Excellence", and "in honor of Waldo Gifford Leland, who authored the landmark Guide to the Archives of the Government of the United States in Washington in 1904; was active in the organization of the Conference of Archivists in 1909; played a central role in the establishment of the U.S. National Archives; and served two terms as SAA President during the 1940s."
Phil Bantin will be honored at the Annual Meeting of the Society of American Archivists (August 12-14, 2009) in Austin, Texas as this year's recipient of the Waldo Gifford Leland Award. The award will be given in recognition of his book Understanding Data and Information Systems for Recordkeeping.
Bantin is the Director of the Indiana University - Office of University Archives and Records Management. He is also the Director of the SLIS Archives and Records Management Specialization (with the Master of Library Science degree).
The SAA Meeting is titled Sustainable Archives: AUSTIN 2009. It will be held as a Joint Annual Meeting of the Council of State Archivists and the Society of American Archivists.
